Could Oral Appliance Therapy Help You?
Juggling multiple devices: Different appliances for grinding, snoring, and TMJ complicate your routine unnecessarily.
Travel ruins sleep treatment: CPAP machines make travel difficult, and you need portable sleep apnea solutions.
Store-bought guards failed: Boil-and-bite guards felt bulky, caused gagging, or didn't address your actual problem.
Complex needs overlap: TMJ, grinding, and sleep issues interconnect, requiring coordinated treatment approach.
Comfort matters most: Previous devices caused more problems than they solved due to poor fit or design.
Professional monitoring needed: Your condition requires adjustment and monitoring that generic devices can't provide.

Oral Appliance Therapy FAQs
Custom oral appliances treat obstructive sleep apnea by keeping your airway open during sleep, prevent teeth grinding (bruxism), alleviate TMJ disorder symptoms, and protect teeth from damage caused by clenching. Different appliance types address specific conditions. We’ll recommend the appropriate device based on your diagnosis and symptoms.
While both are worn in your mouth, they serve different purposes and are designed differently. Sleep apnea appliances reposition your jaw to maintain an open airway. TMJ appliances may reposition the jaw or cushion teeth to reduce muscle strain. Night guards protect against grinding damage. Each is custom-fitted for comfort and effectiveness.
We’ll take detailed impressions or digital scans of your teeth, which are sent to a dental lab that fabricates your custom appliance. This typically takes two to three weeks. You’ll return for a fitting where we ensure proper fit and function, make any needed adjustments, and teach you proper use and care.
Wear frequency depends on your condition. Sleep apnea appliances should be worn every night for effective treatment. Night guards for grinding are also worn nightly. TMJ appliances may be worn full-time or only at night, depending on your treatment plan. Consistent use as directed provides the best results.
When properly designed and fitted, oral appliances shouldn’t permanently change your bite or tooth positions. However, you may notice your bite feels slightly different when you first remove the appliance in the morning. This sensation typically normalizes within minutes as your jaw returns to its usual position.
Contact us if your appliance feels uncomfortable or doesn’t fit properly. Some adjustment time is normal, but significant pain or poor fit indicates adjustments are needed. We can modify your appliance to improve comfort. Don’t suffer through discomfort or stop wearing your appliance without consulting us first.
Rinse your appliance thoroughly with cool water after each use. Brush it daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or denture cleaner. Never use hot water, which can warp the material. Store it in its protective case when not in use. Bring it to dental appointments for professional evaluation and cleaning.
Appliance lifespan varies by type and how much wear it endures. Sleep apnea appliances typically last several years, while night guards for heavy grinders may need replacement every few years. Regular dental checkups allow us to assess wear and recommend replacement before the appliance becomes ineffective or damaged.
Yes, oral appliances are portable and travel-friendly, which is a major advantage over CPAP machines. Keep your appliance in its protective case, and consider packing a backup cleaning solution. For air travel, carry your appliance in your luggage rather than checking it to avoid loss or damage.
Coverage varies by insurance type and plan. Medical insurance often covers oral appliances for diagnosed sleep apnea. Dental insurance may cover appliances for bruxism or TMJ disorder. We’ll verify your benefits and help you understand your coverage, co-pays, and out-of-pocket costs before beginning treatment.
