During the first visit, your dentist prepares your tooth, takes impressions with goopy material, and fits you with a temporary crown. A dental lab then creates your permanent crown, requiring a second visit to remove the temporary and place the final restoration. Same-day crowns eliminate all that inconvenience. You leave with your permanent crown in just one appointment, saving time and avoiding temporary crown hassles.
The entire same-day crown process typically takes about two hours from start to finish. We begin by preparing your tooth and taking precise digital scans, which replaces uncomfortable traditional impressions. Your dentist then designs your custom crown using advanced software, considering your bite and the appearance of your surrounding teeth. Once the design is complete, our in-office milling machine fabricates your crown from a solid block of ceramic, which usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Finally, we make any necessary adjustments and permanently bond the crown to your tooth, completing your restoration in a single visit.
Yes, CEREC same-day crowns are equally strong and durable as traditional lab-made crowns. Both are created from high-quality dental ceramic that’s exceptionally strong and wear-resistant. The digital design process often produces more precise fits than traditional impressions because we can see and adjust the crown design on screen before milling. Studies show that CEREC crowns have success rates comparable to or better than lab-fabricated crowns, with many lasting 15 years or longer. The main difference is convenience, not quality. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or other extremely hard objects that could potentially crack the ceramic. Don’t use your teeth as tools to open packages.
