Who Needs Periodontal Treatment?
Toothbrush shows blood: Regular bleeding when brushing isn't normal and signals infection requiring professional treatment.
Gums pulling away: Teeth look longer as gums recede, exposing sensitive roots and creating cosmetic concerns.
Breath won't freshen: Persistent bad breath despite excellent hygiene indicates deep bacterial infection.
Teeth feeling loose: Even slight mobility signals serious bone loss requiring immediate intervention.
Pus appears sometimes: Pressing gums produces pus or discharge, indicating active infection.
Diabetes harder to control: Blood sugar management struggles despite medication, possibly linked to oral infection.

Periodontal Treatment FAQs
Warning signs include bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, red or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums making teeth look longer, loose teeth, changes in your bite, and painful chewing. If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule an examination promptly. Early treatment prevents gum disease from progressing.
Gum disease results from plaque buildup that hardens into tartar along and below the gumline. Bacteria in this buildup infect gum tissue, causing inflammation and damage. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, genetics, diabetes, certain medications, hormonal changes, and stress. Regular professional cleanings help prevent gum disease development.
Gingivitis is early-stage gum disease where gums become inflamed and bleed easily but no permanent damage has occurred. It’s reversible with proper treatment and improved oral hygiene. Periodontitis is advanced gum disease where infection damages the bone and tissue supporting teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss. Early treatment prevents progression.
Treatment depends on disease severity. Early-stage gum disease may only need more frequent cleanings and improved home care. Advanced cases require scaling and root planing (deep cleaning below the gumline) to remove bacteria and tartar. We may also recommend antibiotics, specialized rinses, or more frequent maintenance visits to control infection.
We numb treatment areas to ensure your comfort during deep cleaning procedures. You might experience mild soreness afterward as your gums heal, but this typically resolves within a few days. Most patients find treatment much more comfortable than expected and are relieved to address the infection causing their symptoms.
Treatment duration varies by disease severity and extent. Deep cleaning may be completed in one long appointment or divided into two to four shorter sessions, treating different areas of your mouth each time. We’ll explain your personalized treatment plan, including timeline and what to expect during each visit.
Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) can be reversed with proper treatment and excellent home care. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can be controlled and prevented from progressing, but damage already done to bone and tissue is permanent. However, treatment stops further destruction, maintains remaining teeth, and restores gum health.
After initial periodontal treatment, most patients need maintenance cleanings every three to four months instead of the standard six-month interval. This more frequent schedule prevents bacteria from reestablishing below the gumline and keeps your gum disease under control. We’ll monitor your progress and adjust frequency as needed.
Yes, research links gum disease to heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications, respiratory disease, and pregnancy complications. The bacteria and inflammation from gum disease can affect your overall health. Treating gum disease protects not only your teeth but also your general wellbeing and quality of life.
Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled brush using proper technique, floss daily to clean between teeth, use an antimicrobial mouthwash if recommended, don’t smoke or use tobacco, maintain a healthy diet, manage stress, and control conditions like diabetes. These habits complement professional treatment and help maintain healthy gums long-term.
