Professional Prevention and Detection

What Are Dental Cleanings and Exams?

Dental cleanings remove hardened tartar deposits that trap bacteria against teeth and gums. Hygienists use specialized instruments to clean areas your toothbrush cannot reach, particularly below the gumline. Following cleaning, polishing removes surface stains and smooths tooth surfaces to resist new plaque formation. Meticulous cleaning protocols eliminate bacterial buildup that causes cavities and gum disease.

Comprehensive examinations evaluate every aspect of oral health including teeth, gums, jaw joints, and oral tissues. Digital x-rays reveal hidden problems between teeth and beneath existing restorations. Your dentist screens for oral cancer, checking for unusual lesions or tissue changes requiring further investigation. Regular visitors maintain optimal oral health through biannual cleanings and exams that prevent small issues from becoming major problems.

Fresh Starts Every Six Months

You'll leave feeling polished and prepared, knowing small problems won't become big ones.

Preventive Care Essentials

Are Regular Cleanings and Exams for You?

Professional cleanings and exams prevent problems before they start, saving money and discomfort long-term. This guide clarifies who benefits most from consistent preventive dental care.

Proactive Health Management

You maintain your car, home, and health preventively, understanding that small investments now prevent major expenses later.

Family History of Gum Disease

Parents or siblings lost teeth to gum disease, and you want to break that cycle through vigilant professional care.

Coffee and Wine Enthusiast

Daily coffee, regular wine, or tea consumption creates stubborn stains that home care alone cannot adequately remove.

Common Patient Situations

Most people know they should visit the dentist regularly but let life get in the way. These signs indicate professional cleaning is overdue.

Invest in Prevention Today

Regular cleanings protect your smile while preventing expensive problems from developing silently.

Your Visit

What Happens During Professional Cleanings and Checkups

Professional cleanings remove harmful buildup that daily brushing leaves behind, protecting your teeth and gums from disease. Combined with thorough examinations, these visits form the cornerstone of preventive dental care. Your appointment follows a syst ematic process ensuring nothing important gets missed.
1

Thorough Cleaning Process

Your hygienist uses specialized instruments to remove tartar deposits from tooth surfaces and below the gum line. Ultrasonic scaling breaks up stubborn buildup while water spray flushes away debris and bacteria. Professional polishing with gritty paste eliminates surface stains and smooths teeth to resist new plaque formation.
2

Comprehensive Examination

Your dentist checks each tooth for decay, cracks, or failing restorations that need attention. We examine your gums for signs of periodontal disease and screen oral tissues for abnormalities. X-rays reveal problems between teeth or in bone structure that visual exams can’t detect.
3

Personalized Prevention Plan

Based on examination findings, we discuss any treatment needs and create your ongoing prevention strategy. You’ll receive customized advice about brushing techniques, flossing methods, and products suited to your specific needs. We schedule your next cleaning appointment, typically in six months, to maintain optimal oral health.

Protection Starts Today

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Cleaning & Exam FAQs

Regular cleanings and exams form the foundation of healthy smiles. Here are answers to common questions about these essential preventive services and how they protect your long-term oral health at our Evansville practice.

Why are regular dental cleanings important?

Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing miss. This prevents cavities and gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss and serious health problems if untreated. Regular visits allow us to detect issues early when they’re easier and less expensive to treat.

Most cleaning appointments take less than an hour. Factors affecting duration include plaque accumulation, whether you have braces, if you need x-rays, and time spent discussing treatment needs. We schedule appointments with adequate time to provide thorough, unhurried care while respecting your busy schedule.

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces above the gumline. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) treats gum disease by removing buildup below the gumline and smoothing root surfaces. If you have periodontal disease, we’ll recommend the appropriate level of cleaning for your needs.

Most patients experience little to no discomfort during routine cleanings. If you have sensitive teeth or gum inflammation, you might feel some tenderness. Let us know about sensitivity concerns beforehand. We can take extra care in sensitive areas and, if needed, use numbing gel to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.

Cleaning removes fresh surface stains that haven’t set in yet, making your smile brighter. However, it doesn’t eliminate deep stains accumulated over time or change your teeth’s natural color. For dramatic whitening results, we offer professional whitening treatments that can lighten your smile several shades.

Your dentist examines teeth, gums, tongue, and oral tissues for signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other concerns. Periodic x-rays reveal problems beneath the surface. We’ll discuss findings, answer questions, demonstrate proper home care techniques, and recommend any necessary treatment to maintain your oral health.

Patients with gum disease typically need cleanings every three months to control bacterial buildup and prevent disease progression. This more frequent schedule helps maintain gum health and protects against tooth loss. Once your gum disease is controlled, we may adjust your cleaning frequency based on your progress.

Yes, children benefit from professional cleanings starting when their first teeth appear. Early dental visits establish good oral health habits, allow us to monitor tooth development, and help children become comfortable with dental care. Regular cleanings prevent cavities and set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

While we’ll clean your teeth thoroughly regardless, brushing and flossing before your appointment is courteous and allows us to spend more time on professional care rather than removing obvious debris. However, don’t skip your appointment if you haven’t had time to brush. We’re here to help regardless.

If we discover cavities, gum disease, or other issues, we’ll explain our findings clearly and recommend appropriate treatment. We’ll review all costs upfront, discuss your options, and never proceed without your approval. Many issues detected early are simple to treat, so regular exams actually save you time and money long-term.

  • Dr Alex is the best dentist around, I can’t recommend her enough. She is very knowledgeable and honest with her treatments. Sarah is such a detailed and gentle hygienist. I always leave their office with shiny teeth and excitement to come back!

  • Review update: I had to return for another appointment to get cavities filled and a crown put on. Dr. Alex and Jo were AMAZING! I was extremely nervous and when I panicked after seeing the numbing needle, they got me set up with nitrous. From then on, it was smooth sailing. They were very comforting and understanding of my anxiety, and Jo even offered to hold my hand. They were quick about getting the work done and letting me know what was going on the entire time. I cannot recommend All in the Family enough. The equipment is all state of the art and their team is OUTSTANDING!! If I could give a million stars, I would. I have not been to the dentist in probably 8-10 years. I come from a small town where the dentist was quite old, and when I came to All in the Family I realized how technologically advanced the field has become. They have so much technology that made going to the dentist a much smoother process! They are even able to x-ray your teeth so they can pinpoint exactly where you may be having issues instead of poking around and possibly hurting you. Brooke was my hygienist and she very sweet and explained everything that she was doing. I voiced that I was a little nervous and she helped me feel more at ease with the process. Highly recommend All in the Family and booking with Brooke as your hygienist!

  • For roughly 22 years I lived with a denture. I have been to many Dentists and not a single one would talk to me. When I found All in the Family Dental, my wife and I sat down and went over everything. I was told it would be a long road since I was a super difficult case. Many months later and 4 different sets of teeth, the team at AITF always made sure I was happy. Fast forward to the last day which was today. I have the best and perfect teeth that feels so amazing and it even helped improve my speech! If you want to go down this path trust me you will never find any one as caring as Adam and the AITF team. It was worth the process, time and money!
