When Do You Need Emergency Dentistry?
Tooth completely out: Adult tooth knocked out needs reimplantation within an hour for best survival chance.
Pain beyond control: No amount of pain medication helps, and throbbing prevents sleep or normal function.
Face swelling spreading: Swelling extends beyond the tooth area, potentially threatening airway or indicating serious infection.
Bleeding won't stop: Oral bleeding continues despite direct pressure for 15 minutes, requiring professional intervention.
Can't close mouth: Jaw trauma prevents normal closure, suggesting fracture or dislocation needing immediate care.
Object stuck painfully: Something wedged between teeth causes severe pain and won't dislodge with floss.

Emergency Dentistry FAQs
Emergencies include severe toothache, knocked-out or loosened teeth, cracked or broken teeth, lost fillings or crowns, abscessed teeth with swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, jaw injury, and anything causing significant pain or threatening tooth survival. If you’re unsure whether your situation is urgent, call us. We’ll help you determine if you need immediate care.
We reserve time in our daily schedule specifically for emergency patients and make every effort to see urgent cases the same day you call. Even if you’re not an established patient at our practice, we welcome emergency calls. Call us as soon as possible, and we’ll work to accommodate you quickly.
Time is critical. Rinse the tooth gently without scrubbing, touching the root, or removing tissue fragments. Try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, keep it moist in milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation product. Call us immediately. If treated within an hour, knocked-out teeth can often be successfully reimplanted.
We’ll see you as soon as possible to diagnose the cause and provide relief. This may involve draining an abscess, prescribing antibiotics for infection, performing a root canal, extracting an unsalvageable tooth, or other treatments depending on the source of pain. Our priority is eliminating your discomfort and addressing the underlying problem.
Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any tooth fragments if possible. Contact us right away. Even seemingly minor chips can expose sensitive tooth layers or have cracks extending into the root. Prompt treatment protects the tooth and prevents further damage or infection.
For true emergencies outside our working hours, call us and follow the prompts for emergency guidance. We’ll provide instructions and arrange care as quickly as possible.
Call us to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. If you have your crown, you can temporarily reattach it with denture adhesive or toothpaste until your appointment. Don’t use super glue. Prompt replacement protects the tooth from damage, decay, and sensitivity.
We focus on treating the source of pain rather than just masking symptoms. However, we may prescribe pain medication along with definitive treatment when appropriate. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen are often effective for dental pain. We’ll recommend the most appropriate pain management strategy for your specific situation.
Most dental insurance plans cover emergency care, though coverage levels vary. We’ll verify your benefits and explain costs before treatment when possible. However, in true emergencies where immediate treatment is necessary to save a tooth or stop severe pain, we prioritize your health and comfort over insurance concerns. We’ll work with you on payment.
Maintain excellent oral hygiene and regular dental checkups to catch problems early. Wear a mouthguard during sports. Don’t chew ice, hard candy, or other hard objects. Avoid using teeth as tools. Don’t ignore dental pain or problems, as small issues often become emergencies when left untreated. Address concerns promptly to prevent urgent situations.
