Anxiety-Free Dental Comfort Care

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation options range from mild relaxation to deep sedation based on patient needs and procedure complexity. Nitrous oxide provides light sedation with quick recovery, while oral or IV sedation offers deeper relaxation for longer procedures. All sedation levels maintain consciousness while reducing anxiety and discomfort perception. Certified protocols ensure safe, monitored care throughout treatment.

Sedation allows completion of multiple procedures in single appointments, reducing overall treatment time. Patients with strong gag reflexes or difficulty sitting still benefit from sedation’s calming effects. Anxious individuals overcome dental phobias through positive sedation experiences that rebuild trust in dental care. Most remember little of their procedure, associating dental visits with comfort rather than stress.

Calm Replaces Fear

The dental chair becomes a place of relaxation instead of anxiety as procedures pass in comfortable ease.

Comfort Process

How Sedation Dentistry Makes Treatment Comfortable

Sedation dentistry transforms dental anxiety into calm relaxation through carefully administered medications tailored to your needs. Options range from mild relaxation to deep sedation based on procedure complexity and anxiety level.
1

Pre-Sedation Preparation

We review your medical history and discuss sedation options appropriate for your procedure and anxiety level. Detailed pre-appointment instructions ensure you arrive properly prepared for safe, effective sedation. You’ll arrange transportation home since sedation effects persist after treatment completion.
2

Sedation Administration

Depending on chosen sedation type, you’ll receive nitrous oxide through a mask or oral medication before treatment begins. We monitor your vital signs continuously while adjusting sedation levels to maintain optimal comfort. You remain responsive but deeply relaxed, often with little memory of the procedure afterward.
3

Recovery and Aftercare

As sedation wears off, you’ll rest comfortably in our recovery area until ready for your companion to drive you home. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and any necessary prescriptions for continued comfort. Most patients feel normal by the next day, amazed they completed treatment without anxiety or discomfort.

Fearless Dental Visits

Finally complete the dental work you've postponed, waking up with treatment done and anxiety gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Dental anxiety shouldn’t prevent you from getting necessary care. Here are answers to common questions about sedation dentistry options at our Evansville practice and how we help anxious patients feel comfortable and relaxed during treatment.

What sedation options do you offer?

We offer three sedation levels: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for mild relaxation, oral conscious sedation for deeper relaxation, and IV conscious sedation for the deepest relaxation level. Each option is safe and effective, and we’ll recommend the level that best addresses your anxiety and the complexity of your planned dental treatment.

You’ll breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a comfortable mask. The gas works quickly to help you feel relaxed while remaining fully conscious and responsive. Once we remove the mask after your procedure, the effects wear off rapidly. You can drive yourself home and return to normal activities immediately.

Oral sedation involves taking prescribed medication about an hour before your appointment. It produces deep relaxation, though you remain conscious. IV sedation delivers medication directly into your bloodstream, allowing for deeper sedation and real-time adjustment during your procedure. IV sedation is our most profound sedation level while still maintaining consciousness.

With nitrous oxide, you’ll remember your treatment. Oral and IV conscious sedation have amnesic effects, so most patients have little to no memory of their procedure. Many describe feeling like the treatment passed in minutes, even if it actually took much longer. This amnesia is often seen as a benefit by anxious patients.

Yes, when administered by trained dental professionals, sedation is very safe. We monitor your vital signs throughout your procedure to ensure your safety. We’ll review your medical history to identify any conditions that might affect sedation. Millions of dental procedures are performed safely with sedation every year.

Candidates include patients with dental anxiety or phobia, those undergoing lengthy or complex procedures, people with a strong gag reflex, individuals who have difficulty getting numb, patients with sensitive teeth, and anyone who wants to complete multiple procedures in fewer appointments. We’ll assess whether sedation is appropriate for your specific needs.

With nitrous oxide, you can drive yourself home. However, oral and IV conscious sedation require you to arrange transportation to and from your appointment. You should also plan to rest for the remainder of the day as the medication wears off completely. Don’t operate machinery or make important decisions until the next day.

Yes, we safely provide nitrous oxide for children who experience dental anxiety or need help staying still during treatment. Nitrous oxide is very safe for children and helps them have positive dental experiences. For extensive treatment, we may recommend higher sedation levels depending on age, cooperation level, and treatment complexity.

Costs vary by sedation type. Nitrous oxide is typically the least expensive option, with oral and IV sedation costing more due to medication and monitoring requirements. Many dental insurance plans cover sedation when medically necessary. We’ll provide cost estimates upfront and discuss whether your insurance provides coverage.

Absolutely. Sedation dentistry allows us to complete more treatment in fewer appointments, making it ideal for patients who have delayed care due to anxiety or fear. Many anxious patients use sedation to finally address accumulated dental problems. We can often complete several procedures in one sedated visit, getting your oral health back on track efficiently.

  • Dr Alex is the best dentist around, I can’t recommend her enough. She is very knowledgeable and honest with her treatments. Sarah is such a detailed and gentle hygienist. I always leave their office with shiny teeth and excitement to come back!

  • Review update: I had to return for another appointment to get cavities filled and a crown put on. Dr. Alex and Jo were AMAZING! I was extremely nervous and when I panicked after seeing the numbing needle, they got me set up with nitrous. From then on, it was smooth sailing. They were very comforting and understanding of my anxiety, and Jo even offered to hold my hand. They were quick about getting the work done and letting me know what was going on the entire time. I cannot recommend All in the Family enough. The equipment is all state of the art and their team is OUTSTANDING!! If I could give a million stars, I would. I have not been to the dentist in probably 8-10 years. I come from a small town where the dentist was quite old, and when I came to All in the Family I realized how technologically advanced the field has become. They have so much technology that made going to the dentist a much smoother process! They are even able to x-ray your teeth so they can pinpoint exactly where you may be having issues instead of poking around and possibly hurting you. Brooke was my hygienist and she very sweet and explained everything that she was doing. I voiced that I was a little nervous and she helped me feel more at ease with the process. Highly recommend All in the Family and booking with Brooke as your hygienist!

Brooke did a wonderful job on cleaning my teeth and getting out tar stains and made my teeth look really great. The atmosphere was very pleasant. The office was very nice. That dentist was very nice and personable. I felt like the office was very relaxed and seemed like they accepted everyone that came into the office. It was a first visit, so I definitely will give it a 10.

  • For roughly 22 years I lived with a denture. I have been to many Dentists and not a single one would talk to me. When I found All in the Family Dental, my wife and I sat down and went over everything. I was told it would be a long road since I was a super difficult case. Many months later and 4 different sets of teeth, the team at AITF always made sure I was happy. Fast forward to the last day which was today. I have the best and perfect teeth that feels so amazing and it even helped improve my speech! If you want to go down this path trust me you will never find any one as caring as Adam and the AITF team. It was worth the process, time and money!
