Is Sedation Dentistry for You?
Appointments always cancelled: You schedule with good intentions but cancel as anxiety builds approaching the date.
Decades avoiding dentists: Fear has kept you away so long that shame about your teeth adds to the original anxiety.
Physical panic responses: Even thinking about dental visits triggers sweating, nausea, or heart racing.
Can't get numb enough: Local anesthetic never seems sufficient, requiring multiple injections that still leave sensation.
Gagging prevents treatment: Instruments trigger immediate gagging that makes even cleanings nearly impossible.
Sounds trigger trauma: Drill noises or suction sounds create visceral fear responses that logic can't overcome.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs
We offer three sedation levels: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for mild relaxation, oral conscious sedation for deeper relaxation, and IV conscious sedation for the deepest relaxation level. Each option is safe and effective, and we’ll recommend the level that best addresses your anxiety and the complexity of your planned dental treatment.
You’ll breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a comfortable mask. The gas works quickly to help you feel relaxed while remaining fully conscious and responsive. Once we remove the mask after your procedure, the effects wear off rapidly. You can drive yourself home and return to normal activities immediately.
Oral sedation involves taking prescribed medication about an hour before your appointment. It produces deep relaxation, though you remain conscious. IV sedation delivers medication directly into your bloodstream, allowing for deeper sedation and real-time adjustment during your procedure. IV sedation is our most profound sedation level while still maintaining consciousness.
With nitrous oxide, you’ll remember your treatment. Oral and IV conscious sedation have amnesic effects, so most patients have little to no memory of their procedure. Many describe feeling like the treatment passed in minutes, even if it actually took much longer. This amnesia is often seen as a benefit by anxious patients.
Yes, when administered by trained dental professionals, sedation is very safe. We monitor your vital signs throughout your procedure to ensure your safety. We’ll review your medical history to identify any conditions that might affect sedation. Millions of dental procedures are performed safely with sedation every year.
Candidates include patients with dental anxiety or phobia, those undergoing lengthy or complex procedures, people with a strong gag reflex, individuals who have difficulty getting numb, patients with sensitive teeth, and anyone who wants to complete multiple procedures in fewer appointments. We’ll assess whether sedation is appropriate for your specific needs.
With nitrous oxide, you can drive yourself home. However, oral and IV conscious sedation require you to arrange transportation to and from your appointment. You should also plan to rest for the remainder of the day as the medication wears off completely. Don’t operate machinery or make important decisions until the next day.
Yes, we safely provide nitrous oxide for children who experience dental anxiety or need help staying still during treatment. Nitrous oxide is very safe for children and helps them have positive dental experiences. For extensive treatment, we may recommend higher sedation levels depending on age, cooperation level, and treatment complexity.
Costs vary by sedation type. Nitrous oxide is typically the least expensive option, with oral and IV sedation costing more due to medication and monitoring requirements. Many dental insurance plans cover sedation when medically necessary. We’ll provide cost estimates upfront and discuss whether your insurance provides coverage.
Absolutely. Sedation dentistry allows us to complete more treatment in fewer appointments, making it ideal for patients who have delayed care due to anxiety or fear. Many anxious patients use sedation to finally address accumulated dental problems. We can often complete several procedures in one sedated visit, getting your oral health back on track efficiently.
