What to Expect After Dental Implant Surgery

Congratulations on taking an important step toward restoring your smile! Following these post-operative care instructions will help ensure smooth healing and the best possible outcome for your dental implants. We've organized this guide to walk you through each stage of your recovery.

The First 24 Hours: Immediate Care

Managing Discomfort and Bleeding

Some pain, bleeding, swelling, and slight seeping are completely normal after implant surgery. You can manage discomfort by taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen according to the label instructions or as directed by our office.

Important: Resist the urge to check the surgical site by pulling on your lip or touching the area with your tongue or fingers. This can disrupt healing and increase your risk of complications.

What to Avoid
During the first 24 hours, do NOT:
  • Use a straw for drinking
  • Brush near the surgery site
  • Rinse your mouth
  • Spit forcefully
  • Smoke
These activities can dislodge the blood clot and interfere with proper healing.
Diet Restrictions

Stick to a liquid and soft food diet for the first few days. Good options include:

  • Soups (lukewarm, not hot)
  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies
  • Juice
  • Protein shakes
Avoid hot and spicy foods, carbonated beverages, and alcohol for at least 24 hours. You may also experience some sensitivity to cold and heat during this time, which is normal.
Rest and Recovery

Take it easy on the day of your surgery. Avoid strenuous activities, excessive work, or intense exercise. You can resume normal activities the following day as you feel comfortable.

Days 2-3: Reducing Swelling

Managing Swelling

Swelling around your face, eyes, and surgical site is common and often becomes most noticeable two to three days after surgery. Here’s how to manage it:

Cold Therapy (First 36 Hours)
  • Apply a cold compress to your face near the implant site
  • Never apply ice directly to your skin; always use a cloth barrier
  • Use for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off
  • After 36 hours, cold therapy becomes less effective
Heat Therapy (After 36 Hours)
  • Switch to moist heat applications on the sides of your face
  • This helps reduce lingering swelling
  • Continue the 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off pattern
Starting Oral Hygiene

After the first 24 hours, you can begin gentle rinsing:

  • Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water
  • Gently rinse your mouth three times a day
  • Do not rinse vigorously or spit forcefully
Continue brushing and flossing the rest of your mouth as normal, but avoid the surgery site.

Days 4-7: Gradual Return to Normal

Expanding Your Diet

During the first few days after surgery, continue with liquids and soft foods. As you feel comfortable, you can gradually introduce more solid foods, but stay away from anything hard, crunchy, or chewy that could put pressure on the implant site.

Medications
  • Antibiotics to prevent infection (complete the entire course)
  • Pain medication as needed for comfort
If You Wear a Denture

If you have a denture that overlaps the implant site, minimize wearing it immediately after surgery to allow proper healing. After the first week, you can gradually increase the amount of time you wear your denture as comfort allows.
