What is sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a dangerous sleep disorder that actually stops your breathing during the night because of an obstructed airway. Since your airway is blocked, the lack of oxygen signals your brain to wake you up, which can actually happen hundreds of times during the night in severe cases.

Sleep apnea can contribute to a host of problems, including:

  • Heart disease and failure
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

When you're unable to get the rest you need, it dramatically impacts your health and quality of life.

Diagnosing Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea can be tricky to diagnose as you may not even realize you wake up throughout the night. However, some signs and symptoms to be aware of are:

  • Loud snoring that keeps your bed partner awake
  • Frequent headaches or migraines, especially in the morning
  • Waking up coughing or choking during the night
  • Waking with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Chronic fatigue or exhaustion

Everyone deserves a good night's sleep; we can help you reclaim yours! At All in the Family Dental, we provide solutions for sleep apnea with a comfortable oral appliance that's easy to wear while you sleep.
