back to school dental tips

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost time for the kids to return to school. With so much going on, healthy dental habits may not be at the top of your list, but there are some easy ways to prioritize dental health during the school year. Keep reading to learn more.

Dental Tips for a Healthy School Year

Here are some of the best ways to help your child maintain healthy teeth and gums and avoid dental issues:

  1. Schedule a back-to-school cleaning — Even though you’re busy buying school supplies and planning for a new school year, making an appointment for a routine dental exam and cleaning is a good practice to promote healthy habits.
  2. Replace their toothbrush — When you’re out buying school clothes and other supplies, purchase new toothbrushes. Let your child choose their favorite color or character to encourage them to brush.
  3. Pack healthy snacks — If you take the time to pack healthy, nutritious snacks for your child, it gives them options and can help them make good choices while they’re at school. Try to include snacks high in protein and fiber.
  4. Pack a flosser — You know the importance of flossing, so if you pack a handheld flosser for your child, it can encourage them to develop this habit after they eat lunch at school. Be sure to talk to your child about how to floss or ask your dentist for some pointers.
  5. Establish a school routine — Kids thrive on routine, so set a specific time for your child to brush and floss their teeth in the morning and at night. This will help them keep their teeth and gums healthy. Consider rewarding them for their consistent habits.
  6. Get a mouthguard — If your child participates in sports, consider getting a mouthguard to protect their teeth. Ask our dental team about mouthguards during your child’s back-to-school cleaning.
